Frequently Asked Questions

 What is Freegal?

Freegal is a downloadable music service, similar to iTunes, with the exception that all of the songs in Freegal's catalog are free for you to download. You may now also stream music from Freegal! All you need to access the catalog is your library card number and last name. There is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions on the songs.

How long can I keep a song?

After downloading a song, it is yours to keep forever! There are no DRM restrictions on the music files but other copyright laws apply for all music downloaded.

How do I stream music?

When you move your cursor over a song or an album, you will see a "stream now" button appear. Simply press Stream Now and start listening. When you press that button on an album, you can stream the entire album in order!

How much music is on the Freegal site?

Freegal offers access to about 7 million songs. The songs are provided through agreements with over 10,000 music labels, including the labels of Sony Music Entertainment.

Can I download songs at the library?

Yes. You can download songs from Freegal using library computers but you must have a CD, DVD or flash drive to which to save the song.

Can I download songs directly to my mobile device?

Yes. Freegal has a free app for your Android phone\tablet (using Google Play) or your Apple iPhone\iPad\iPod Touch (using the App Store).

How many songs can I download?

You may download up to five songs per week. Each Sunday at 11:01 pm Central Standard Time, your weekly download counter is reset to zero and you can download five more songs for the week. If you have more than one cardholder using the same computer, the browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox) must be closed and reopened before another cardholder can log in.

How will I know how many songs I've downloaded this week?

Your weekly download counter is located at the top of the Freegal site. For example, if the counter says 1/5, then it means of your weekly download limit of 5 songs, you have already downloaded 1 song.

How do I download a song?

When you've found the song you wish to download, click Download Now next to the song. At the prompt, select Save and choose where you want to save the song. If you do not specify a location to which to save the song, you might have difficulty locating it on your computer. If you're not presented with a save prompt, try right-clicking the link and choosing the option to save the link (e.g., Save Target As, Save Link As, Download Linked File, etc). This will let you choose where to save your song. If you're not sure about your default download location, find out before you download a song in order to save time and frustration.

Music is downloaded in the MP3 format and once downloaded, it can be played on your computer, transferred to a mobile device that plays MP3s or burned to a CD.

NOTE: Any time you click Download Now, even if you decide to cancel it, the download will count towards your weekly allotment.

You can also use Freegal's free app for Android or Apple to download songs directly to your mobile device.

Can I download a whole album?

Songs are available for download on an individual basis only. Over time, you can eventually download all the songs on an album.
