Business: New Businesses in Tulsa

Sources for Identifying New Businesses in Tulsa

A New Businesses column appears in the Tulsa World approximately every two weeks. The information in these columns is provided by the businesses themselves. This information is quite brief, usually just a description of the business, the address and contact information.

Use the library’s subscription to the online archived Tulsa World to find the New Businesses columns. To access the online subscription service, from the library’s main page click Research, Find Articles, Alphabetical list of all databases and then scroll down to the T’s and click Tulsa World. Search by the name of a business or use the customized search by changing in all Text to In Headline and then enter “new businesses” in the search field. Using quotation marks around the phrase “new businesses” will filter out many irrelevant hits and provide a list of the New Businesses columns.

The For the Record column in the Tulsa Worldlists new building permits for business construction and Certificates of Partnership filed with the Tulsa County Court Clerk. The list is organized by the date the permit was filed. This column appears weekly in the Sunday Business section and unfortunately cannot be accessed online.

Tulsa Daily Commerce and Legal News contains information on businesses in Tulsa. TCCL retains the current year with other business periodicals on the 4 th floor of the Central Library. Hardesty and Martin Regional Libraries also subscribe to this newspaper.

The Chamber Report from the Tulsa Regional Chamber has information on business developments in the city, most notably on Chamber members. The Central Library retains about a year’s worth of reports.

New businesses that engage in sales must file with the Oklahoma Tax Commission(OTC) where they obtain a sales tax permit if they are to collect sales tax or a sales tax exemption* certificate if they will not collect sales taxes. The OTC does not maintain a list of new filings, but they will look up individual company names. The OTC also produces a comprehensive list of Oklahoma businesses, their sales tax number or sales tax exemption number and the date it was assigned. This list is available for $125/year. Call the OTC at 405-521-3279 to order a copy.

New incorporations must file with the Oklahoma Secretary of State. The Secretary’s office does not maintain a list of new filings. The Business Records Department of the Secretary’s office, however, will provide searches on specific corporations, limited partnerships, trade names, and trademarks. The search includes correct name, status, date of registration, service agent and address, state of domicile, authorized shares and par value, amendments, name changes, mergers, and trade names.

There are two ways to request or obtain a search:

  1. A written request may be directed to this office. The fee is $5.00 for each search. A computer printout of the available information is provided to the customer.
  2. Public access terminals are available in the office in Oklahoma City for use at no charge.

To verify the existence of a specific company name, call 405.521.3911.
